The Short Answer: Fall and Spring

In Central Florida, the best times to lay sod are fall (October–November) and spring (March–May). The weather is warm enough for new roots to grow quickly, but not so hot that the sod is under stress.

That said, sod can be installed year-round here, including summer and winter. Florida lawns like St. Augustine and Zoysia are warm-season grasses, and our winters are mild. Each season just needs a little different care.

Season by Season

SeasonHow it goes for new sod
Spring
March–May
One of the best times. The grass is waking up and roots establish fast. Spring is often our dry season, so keeping the irrigation on schedule matters.
Summer
June–September
Grass grows fastest and afternoon rains help, but the heat is hard on brand-new sod and wet, humid weather raises the risk of fungus. Very doable with good watering and care.
Fall
October–November
One of the best times. Milder temperatures mean less stress, and the soil is still warm enough for strong rooting before winter.
Winter
December–February
Grass grows slowly or goes partly dormant, so rooting takes longer and the lawn may not look its greenest until spring. It needs less water, and it's a fine time if you don't want to wait.

Installing Sod in Summer

Summer installs are common in Orlando and turn out well. The keys are consistent morning watering and keeping an eye out for heat stress and fungus. Avoid watering in the evening, because grass that stays wet overnight is more likely to get fungus. Also note that many Central Florida counties restrict nitrogen fertilizer in summer. See our fertilizer blackout guide and our new sod watering guide.

Installing Sod in Winter

New sod laid in winter roots more slowly because the grass isn't actively growing. It needs less frequent watering, and too much water in cold weather can encourage large patch fungus. Expect the lawn to fill in and green up fully as it warms in spring. See our lawn fungus guide.

Plan About a Month Ahead

Whatever season you pick, start early. Killing the old lawn and weeds properly takes 2–4 weeks before the new sod goes down. That step is what keeps old weeds from growing back through your new lawn. If you want a new lawn by a certain date, like a party, a sale or the holidays, contact us about a month before. See how sod replacement works.
