When a Lawn Needs Replacing

Some lawns can be nursed back. Others are past saving, and new sod is faster and more reliable than fighting the old turf for another year. These are the signs we look for when we walk your yard.

Weeds Have Taken Over

When weeds and other grasses outnumber the lawn, spot-spraying stops working. Killing everything and starting over is the clean fix.

Large Dead or Bare Areas

Chinch bugs, fungus and drought can leave big brown patches that never fill back in. Read our guides on chinch bugs and lawn fungus.

Wrong Grass for the Yard

Full-sun grass planted under oaks thins out every year. Replacing it with a variety made for your light fixes the cause, not just the symptoms.

Bumpy Ground or Standing Water

Low spots, ruts and poor drainage need regrading, which means the old lawn has to come up first.

Selling or Just Moved In

A fresh lawn is one of the fastest ways to improve curb appeal before a sale, or to start fresh in a new home.

Not Sure? We'll Tell You Honestly

On the free estimate we'll tell you whether your lawn really needs replacing, and which grass fits your sun, shade and traffic.

How Our Sod Replacement Works

Old lawn fully dead after herbicide treatment, ready for removal
Step 1Kill the old lawn and weedsWe apply a commercial-grade non-selective herbicide to kill existing weeds and grass. This phase takes 2–4 weeks and usually includes more than one application. It's what keeps old weeds from growing back up through your new sod.
Sod cutter removing the dead lawn in strips
Step 2Cut it out and haul it awayUsing a sod cutter or tiller, we remove the top layer of old turf and debris to a depth of about 2 inches. Removal and disposal of the old lawn are included.
Front yard raked and graded smooth, ready for new sod
Step 3Grade and levelWe level the area carefully so water drains away from your home and the new sod sits flush with your driveway, walkways and beds.
The same front lawn one week after Strada sod installation, green and rooting in
Step 4Install fresh sodEvery pallet is inspected on delivery, and we stagger the seams with precise cuts around your beds and curves. We set up your irrigation timer before we leave, and we recommend a professional insecticide and fungicide application within 24–48 hours. This is the same lawn one week later.
